Big Data is here. In the past few years of teaching, I have learned that the high school classroom does not operate like it did when I was sitting with my classmates. Today’s classroom is driven by student data. Classrooms report to the school, which helps to accrue data for each district, which then reports to the state, and then we as a nation can compare educational progress.
Three things to remember about data systems:
1- IT departments are not decision makers, but another input in any enterprise architecture that must make decisions based on what is best for the whole organism.
2- Testing provides data. Data is what we are seeking, and there is not great way to build webs of data without testing our students. We need to be constantly measuring how much we test them, and analyze how effective it all is if it takes away from learning time
3- Data architectures can save time and effort. If you can link your standards and programs, then students will have quick access to building on their limitations. A solid data architecture can help provide this in seamless systems that make analyzing the numbers faster, put schools in a place where they can address deficits directly.
