Working in a small charter school, the teachers and staff are always a little closer and more aware of the decisions being made around our campus. There are no distant district meetings, and many of the worries and decisions are shared with the staff during meetings. My school is also in just its fourth year of operation, so it has not been long since the director and school board set about with our mission and vision. The path to achieving those for the first time is still very real, and something we are striving for all the time.
The value of the work we have done in EDL 680 this week is to put all of that information into focus for me. As a teacher, I am always thinking about how board decisions affect my classroom, or how many students I will have in each period. In thinking about Business Architecture, I am able to consider how my school operates as a framework in a larger sense. Thinking like an administrator makes some of the frustrating decisions around campus seem more realistic. It also seems to make some of the seemingly simple decisions a little confounding.
I have discovered that my school seems to be working holistically to meet its vision and mission. We strive to be innovative in ways to keep our students engaged in the classroom, and with the community around them. We are afforded a lot of opportunity because of our partnership with the library, and we need to work harder in many aspects to make sure that we are utilizing that partnership.
All of this has helped me to see how important it is to not only create a vision that you can stand behind, but it has helped me to see how our school functions to keep that vision in mind, and why we do so much in reflecting on our processes and practices. It is important to always keep that in mind.
